1816 N-2 R1. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown, at least 25% of the planchet still showing mint color. No notable spots, stains, or contact marks. A premium example in every respect, very close to gem. M-LDS with a rim cud from star 8 to star 11 and a smaller one at star 11.5. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state 1816-1820 cents, but this is one of the finest from the 1816's in that group. Called the "best" N-2 they had seen by C. Douglas Smith and Del Bland. Graded MS65 by Bland. Our grade is MS64+. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36527) .

1817 N-6 R1. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. Frosty greenish steel brown and light olive. Sharply struck and quite attractive. The dentils are sharply defined around both sides, the fields are hard and slightly reflective, and the repunching on the left foot of the N in ONE is bold. A beautiful cent, what legendary cent collector C. Douglas Smith called a "Greenie" due to the attractive greenish steel brown toning. Noyes photo #35637. Our grade is MS60+. 1817 N-7 R7 (without Mouse) VG7. Sharpness VF30 but there is shallow verdigris scattered over the obverse and the reverse is dull from moderate granularity. In addition there is a significant dig in the center of the reverse. Not the most attractive large cent, but the date and legends are complete and easily readable. Extremely rare EDS, before the large "Mouse" break forms on the top of the head. 1823 Restrike. NGC graded MS-66 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous bright original red fading to light chocolate brown and steel, nearly a third of the original red remaining. Essentially flawless. The best identifying marks are a faint vertical streak of dark steel toning from the I in LIBERTY to the rim above and a microscopic speck of dark toning just above the berry under the first A in AMERICA. Latest die state with a strong bisecting die crack across the obverse, another that meanders across the reverse, and a final crack down through TE in STATES to the earlier bisecting crack. These "Restrikes" were made privately outside the mint using discarded mint dies sold as scrap. The obverse die used was the normal Newcomb-2 variety of 1823, but apparently a reverse die of the type used in 1823 was not available and they substituted a reverse die that had been used for the 1813 Sheldon-293 variety. The result was an "1823" cent that looked nothing like the genuine mint product, but it filled a need for collectors since this date has always been a challenge in high grade. Breen says 49 uncracked examples were struck in 1862 for Joseph J. Mickley before the obverse die broke, and an unknown number of pieces were struck from the cracked dies. This is one of the finest known. Our grade is MS65. Population 1; none finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
